Surgery for hernias which cause pain or discomfort.
About the condition. A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. There are various types of hernia including inguinal, femora, umbilical and incisional.
What’s the procedure? Hernia repair surgery involves returning the displaced organs to their proper position and placing surgical mesh to strengthen the repair of the muscle tissue.
When is it needed? You may need surgery when your hernia enlarges, causes pain or discomfort, or becomes incarcerated or strangulated.
How it’s done. Hernia surgery may be performed as an open or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Studies have shown that laparoscopic repair leads to less postoperative pain, a shorter convalescence, and faster return to work.
